A dance art book is used for documenting ideas and things that inspire you. Write, doodle, draw, and collage. Use the art book as a tangible, creative source and outlet for your notes, ideas, thoughts, influences, questions, frustrations, feelings, etc. on dance. Contribute to your dance art book regularly.

For members of the certification programs, you will be required to maintain a a dance art book beginning in Level 2. Your book should be no smaller than 9×12″ or B4 paper*. The same book can be used for each level and for both formats.

Beginning with Level 2, workshops have pre-workshop assignments and during-the-workshop homework for which you will need your art book. Bring your dance art book to every workshop L2 and above.

*B4 paper is 250mm x 353mm (9.8″ x 13.9″).

In many of her classes and workshops, Suhaila teaches students to use a foam roller to help roll out muscles, especially areas like quads, the I.T. band, and hamstrings. Ashley Borden has created a roller instructional guide that provides an overview and then specific exercises on using the roller. Before using a roller, work with a qualified instructor or medical professional so you are using proper technique and selecting the correct exercises. Reading List

Technique & Dance

Suhaila Level 1 Study Guide by Suhaila Salimpour. Suhaila Salimpour SL1 Study Guide.
The New Danse Orientale by the Salimpours. Published in 2013 with 70% more material and explanation than the 1978 original. Required technique book for the Jamila Salimpour format and certification program. Click here to purchase.
Dance Anatomy (2010) by Jacqui Greene Haas.
Available on Amazon as a paperwork or in Kindle format. Also available on the publisher’s website (www.HumanKinetics.com) as a paperwork, PDF, and ePub.

Important Note:
This book is an excellent, accessible anatomy book for established Western dance (i.e., ballet, jazz, and modern). For belly dance, Suhaila developed her own safe technique that involves additional muscle separation, layering and sharing beyond that represented in the book. Although the book does not cover the changes and differences required for belly dance, it does provide a standard base from which we can begin discussion. The changes and differences are thoroughly discussed and explained in Salimpour classes and workshops.

Note that the author includes typical imagery and phrases used in established Western dance classes, and students that have studied that form since childhood usually understand the underlying meanings of those terms. For an adult learner new to dance with a focus on belly dance, some of these terms may seem confusing at first.

General Notations about the Book
Below are a few notations to assist a belly dancer when using this textbook.

• The author uses the word “ active” which is synonymous (in most cases) with the Salimpour terms: “anchor”, “stabilizer”, and “primary muscle”,

• Page 29 (last sentence of the first paragraph): The author is referring to the lower abdominals, which are used to stabilize the spine and spinal movements.

• Page 51. The core muscles discussed, in general) are used as a unit in Western dance for stabilization. For the Salimpour belly dance technique, these same muscles still do the job of providing stability, but they are also isolated, muscle-shared, and layered for additional movements specific to Middle Eastern dance.

• Page 73. Chapter 5 has a solid introduction on the “Shoulder Girdle and Arms” including an excellent diagram on page 77.

• Page 102-7. Given the special needs of belly dance that are outside the scope of this specific dance technique book, The Salimpour technique specifically addresses, overrides, and/or extends beyond the author’s discussions of hip disassociation, pelvic link, pelvic floor muscles, etc.

• Pages 108, 112-3. The author does not reference the gluteus maximus except as an extension of the hamstring (page 116). Given the technical and stability needs of belly dance, the gluteus maximus is integrated more significantly in the Salimpour technique.

• Pages 134-7. In the Salimpour technique, all three gluteus muscles are discussed (maximums, medius, and minimus).

• Pages 138-9. Excellent visual and information for the inner thigh muscles.

Dance Psychology for Artistic Performance and Excellence (2015) by Jim Taylor and Elena Estanol. The book can be found on Amazon as a paperback and in Kindle format. It is also available from the publisher’s website (www.humankinetics.com) as a paperwork, PDF, or ePub.

This book replaces The Psychology of Dance (1995) by Jim Taylor and Ceci Taylor.

Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet (1982) by Gail Grant.
The Language of Ballet: A Dictionary (1987) by Thailia Mara.

Dancers (2007) documentary directed by Celame Barge and produced by Atef Hetata.  Synopsis from documentary:  They are between 17 and 40 years old, coming from all over Egypt, young girls, wives, mothers, they dance for a living. They are the dancers of Cairo among the popular class. At the hairdresser, in the “hotel” for dancers or at home, in weddings, nightclubs, on and back stage, the film follows them and tries to show the depth of a struggle under the make-up and the dance. A reality far from the cliché of belly dancing.  (click here)
