Listening to Music

Most of us have time to listen to music, even if we just put on some background music.  But every little bit of time exposed to the music, even music in the background, makes a difference.  Give some thought to how you might listen to more Middle Eastern music.  Think about playing the original classics [...]

Insist on Yourself (Quotes & Thoughts)

Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can offer with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation, but of the adopted talent of another, you have only an extemporaneous, half possession. You’re dancing spirit (Quotes & Thoughts)

Dance is bigger than the physical body. Think bigger than that. When you extend your arm, it doesn't stop at the end of your fingers, because you're dancing bigger than that: you're dancing spirit.¹ Judith Ann Jamison, Dancer and Choreographer.  Currently Artistic Director Emerita, Alvin Ailey Dance Theater ¹Quote from Jamison's autobiography, Dancing Spirit, published [...]

The Interesting Things that Happen on the Way (Quotes & Thoughts)

It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end. Ursula K. LeGuin Most of us have heard the saying "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans".¹  The same can happen for goals.  Both short-term and long-term goals are good [...]

Inspirations: The Nicholas Brothers

Before she joined the circus in 1942 at the age of 16, Jamila Salimpour frequented the Apollo Theater in Harlem (New York City) to see the exciting music and dance performances.  She became a huge fan of the Nicolas Brothers.  Fayard Nicolas (1914-2006) and Harold Nicolas (1921-2000) were tap dancers, regarded by many as the best [...]

Communication (Quotes & Thoughts)

I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what is too deep to find for words. Ruth St. Denis As an exercise just for fun, think back on your  belly dance performances and imagine that someone in the audience was watching your dance as communication or expression.  What did your [...]
