Meet the Salimpour Performance Collectives!

Building Community Through Shared Goals As the Salimpour School has grown and expanded over the years, little enclaves of students have popped up all around the world. These communities had first been centered around Suhaila’s longtime sponsors, such as in Florida, Taiwan, and Belgium. And as Suhaila and her Level 5 instructors build their student [...]

Summer Contest 2019: 70 Seconds for 70 Years of Salimpour

The Salimpour School is celebrating 70 years of sharing the art of belly dance with the world. When Jamila Salimpour first started teaching in 1949, she had no idea she would become one of the leading figures in American belly dance. Since then, the Salimpour School has expanded into an internationally-acclaimed educational institution, with its [...]

Sheherezade: Storytelling For Wider Audiences

In the Beginning… of the 2000s Belly Dance Boom In 2003, belly dance in the United States was on the verge of an explosion of popularity. Since the 1980s, interest in the dance lay dormant, superseded by fitness trends like aerobics and Jazzercise. And the idea of the “exotic orient” as a peaceful place full [...]

Moving with Grace: A New New Home

For an area of the United States known for its creativity, innovation, and unique creative community, the San Francisco Bay Area has become notoriously difficult for artists and non-profit organizations. Many commercial property owners are tantalized by the prospect of renting to start-ups, tech companies, or other office-oriented businesses that will be more likely to [...]

Suhaila Solo: The Art of the Nightclub Show

In our previous explorations of Suhaila Salimpour’s performance video catalog—"Banat Iskandaria," "Pharaonic Suite," 1991 BC, and Unveiled—we have followed the development of her choreographic work to recorded music. What we haven’t seen is her work as an improvisational performer, and yet this kind of performance—in a nightclub setting with a live band—is at the heart of [...]

Exciting Changes to Our Certification Program in 2018

At the Salimpour School, we are constantly evaluating our belly dance certification program to make sure that our students receive a comprehensive belly dance education. And after each run of intensives at the home studio, Suhaila and her team look at what worked for students and what didn’t, finding ways to make sure that you [...]

Celebrating Family at the Center for International Dance
