Suhaila Level 2   •   Jamila Level 2   •   Performance Prep Workshop

Salimpour Level 2

The Salimpour School offers Level 2 certification in both the Suhaila format and the Jamila format.  Details about both formats, workshops, and certification testing is below.

In Suhaila Level 2, students continue developing muscle and body awareness while increasing the prevision, efficiency and fluidity of their movements. Layering concepts are introduced in the warm-up. Dancers begin integrating belly dance movements with dance movement and cymbals. Additional music theory, history and cultural elements are included. Choreography is introduced both as a training and testing tool.  SL1 certification required.

In Jamila Level 2, students continue their study of the step families, movements, dance history, stylization, and cymbal patterns. Learning is promoted through technique, stylization, choreography, reading, and lecture. Learning tools, workshop information, testing details, and a list of the covered steps, cymbals, etc. are provided in this section.  JL1 certification required.

Private Lesson with L5
In order to test into SL2 dancers must schedule a private lesson with a L5 dancer to have the videos evaluated and approved for before the SL2 weeklong at which they will test.  If videos are not view-able, dancers will need to re-film and re submit the work.  Or, if work still needs to be done, dancers can continue to schedule privates for guidance and feedback until they are approved for testing.

**Test video submission deadline is 45 days prior to the testing workshop.  Re-submitted & corrected work, final evaluations & official sign-off by your assigned L5 are due 15 days prior to the testing workshop.  Videos submitted after deadlines may be subject to restrictions or not evaluated based on staff availability.

CECs may be accrued by taking any workshops taught by Suhaila or officially sanctioned by Suhaila International. A list is available on the main website (http://suhailainternational.com/workshops_current.php).
If you have questions about which workshops or classes are applicable for CECs, contact us.
More information about CECs and certification renewal fees is available on the website.

SL2 Workshop Registration

SL2 Workshops

What are L2 Weeklong Workshops?

SL2 workshops are fun and challenging workshops with a specific focus on L2 material.  You learn exercises and drills to develop strength, endurance and efficiency of movement. Further emphasis is placed on integrating posture, belly dance movements, dance movement, cymbals, etc.  A listing of L2 workshops can be found in the Current Workshops section.

How do I prepare for a L2 Workshop?

  • Review the About Workshops page.
  • Use the list of training tools and resources provided in this section with a focus on SL2 technique classes and the L2FCDS choreography.
  • Review the L1 Study Guide; focus on drilling movements halftime and fulltime in home position, at the barre, and in traveling drills.

What do I bring to a L2 Workshop?

  • Bring your dance art book as described in the Documentation Section of the Resources page; click here.
  • Bring a copy of the L2FCDS Choreography notes (and any questions) for your use and review during the workshop.
  • Optional.  Prepare an 8-12 week Training Plan, carefully following the instructions in the Resources section. Email your Training Plan to the Certification Coordinator prior to the first morning of the workshop. The goal is to learn to write a training plan, and feedback will be given to students. (Submit only the Training Plan, not the Time Priority Assessment.)
  • Bring finger cymbals, veil, ballet or jazz shoes, hand towel, refillable water bottle, and deodorant to reapply as necessary.
  • Have access to a computer and printer for homework assignments during the week.
  • You are encouraged to arrive early and warm-up prior to class.
  • Suhaila often runs over the allotted teaching time. Please plan accordingly and allow for maximum flexibility in your timing to take advantage of unique events and opportunities.

In order to test into JL2 dancers must schedule a private lesson with a L5 dancer to have the videos evaluated and approved for before testing JL2 weeklong in which they will test.

JL2 Workshop Registration

JL2 Workshops

JL2 workshops immerse students in the format using dance instruction, lecture, and choreography as the tools for learning and testing. Classes are taught by Suhaila and authorized TAs/instructors. Participants must have current Jamila L1 certification to attend, and students are expected to have a thorough working knowledge of Jamila’s format and terminology.

How do I prepare for a Jamila L2 Workshop?

  • Read/review the About Workshops page that includes Common Questions, Studio Rules, and more.
  • Review the Training Tools with close attention to online classes, the choreographies, and reading materials.
  • If you are planning to test at a JL2 workshop, make sure to submit the two required choreographies via private lesson (in person or Skype) with a JL5 instructor and receive approval (70% passing) on both.
  • You are encouraged to arrive early and warm-up prior to class.
  • Workshops often run over the allotted teaching time. Please plan accordingly and allow for maximum flexibility in your timing to take advantage of unique events and opportunities.

What do I bring to a Jamila L2 Weeklong Workshop?

How do I sign up for a Jamila L2 Workshop?  A listing of Jamila L2 workshops (with links to complete details) can be found in the Current Workshops section.

About Testing.  Certification testing is available for an additional fee.  A practical exam is held after a JL2 workshop or series.  The JL2 choreographies are also tested both prior to the workshop via private lessons with JL5 instructors and also as part of the practical exam held after a JL2 workshop or series.  It is rare for L2 workshop attendees to test on their first time to a L2 workshop, however there are exceptions.  Information about L1 and L2 exams in both the Suhaila and Jamila formats is consolidated in one section on the certification exam page.

  • See “Pre-Test Submissions” under Training tools
Performance Prep Registration
